Mangrovox Sound Art
Blue Carbon Sound created a mangrovox as part of the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship in Belize. The sound art instrument was created to give a voice to mangroves.
Mangrovox 2026
The mangrovox is an instrument of improvisation. Spontaneous composition. Scraping, tapping or plucking with string or fishing line. Playing with a bow like a viola. The sounds layered over one another in a continuous process of creation.
The instrument itself is put together in a process of improvisation, too. Pictured above are pieces of the whole that can be put together in different ways.
There are no final compositions. I do not know how the sounds will emerge until I begin to play.
